Critical Reflection on Effective Communication SIE2016

As we approach the end of the module, I feel that I have improved on both my written and oral communication skills. The coursework has provided me with the opportunity to practice my writing with exercises such as as the reader's response and refining the technical report. In the physical aspect, the many group discussions and mini presentations throughout the course has helped build my visual and verbal communication skills.

I found the group/pair work to have enhanced the learning experience. It has helped to facilitate a more conducive learning environment through constant group discussions, peer reviews and assessments. I am a believer in group learning, especially with peers who are willing and capable. As a group we are able to learn from each other's mistakes and to build on each other's knowledge.

In my introductory post, I had set a goal for myself. I wanted to be more confident when speaking in front of an audience. In the past three months, we have been given multiple opportunities to present in front of our classmates and the entire class for our final presentation. While I don't think that I will ever be fully comfortable speaking in front of a crowd, I believe that I have learnt how to better prepare myself which makes for a more confident presentation.

Overall, I have found this module to be enriching and I can see how it is applicable for my other modules as well as for when I graduate and join the workforce. I have also genuinely enjoyed myself over the course of this module. I believe that communication skills are not something that we achieve overnight or even over a trimester, but rather it is the accumulation of experiences and learning from our past mistakes. In that aspect I believe that the Effective Communication class has equipped us with the necessary skills and has succeeded in nudging us in the right direction.

    Dear Jerome,

    I agree with you that communication skills are not acquired overnight or in a short span of time. It definitely takes time to improve on verbal and non-verbal communications since this is a language. Language isn't built overnight but through consistent learning from mistakes made and experiences that give rise to a successful communicator. I do realise that group work is a great way to approach this module as everyone within the team is able to help each other learn by giving feedbacks, correcting mistakes as we work together in written assignments and oral presentations. As such, I agree with you that this module has equipped us with the necessary communication skillsets that all of us definitely need in the future when we join the workforce.

    I noticed that you are serious in improving yourself and getting better with each task you do and I hope that you'll keep up this attitude as I believe it is definitely beneficial to you now as well as in the future.

    Hello Jerome,

    First and foremost, i have to say a very good job in your achievements from this module because I feel the same way as you are!

    Im am very impressed by your presentation and enjoyed it thoroughly! It was professional, engaging and in the same time very reflective! You made me really think in the perspective of a commuter trying to squeeze into the heavily packed train.

    Language is something that will not just improve fortnightly. It is through practices and experiences that will mould one's proficiency. Lets continue to work hard and improve ourselves! Cheers!

    Hi Jerome,

    Yes I believed that all of us here agree that we have gained valuable skills and knowledge from this module. And working in teams have definitely developed our interpersonal skills and we have defnitely gained so much more when we get to learn from others and by sharing our mistakes in a class. All of this adds up to a positive experience in the module.

    Remember that you are not alone in this journey and we are all in this as a class to progress together.

Analytical Reflection on Oral Presentation

Looking back on the presentation, I felt that it has been a positive experience overall. As a group, Claustrophobic has learnt a lot. I have learnt more about myself as a presenter and I am now more conscious of myself when giving a presentation. Additionally, I feel that Zhouzhi and XueLe has improved tremendously since the start of the term and I am glad for them. Going into specifics, I have received feedback from my peers that I tend to pace around too much. I did so to help myself cope with the nervousness. I understand now that it could be distracting for the audience. I have also received comments that I came off as a little 'too casual'. The team and I had done multiple runs of the presentation in an informal setting. I believe this has resulted in some of my informal quirks surfacing up during my final presentation. I agree with the criticisms, and I will make a conscious effort minimize my unnecessary movements and to keep an appropriate tone in the future. Reg
